Frequently Asked Questions

There are many misconceptions about what is truly Australian or truly organic produce.

Here are some commonly asked questions and answers to help shed light on how to choose the highest quality and healthiest mango and produce.

  • What is the difference between organic and certified organic?
Organic produce can be sold without any form of testing, accountability or approval, leaving the consumer with no indication whether the product is indeed organic. When a product is labelled certified organic in Australia the customer can purchase with confidence that every element from production to shelf has been approved by a certifying body guaranteeing the product is grown and produced organically.
  • What is sustainable farming?
Sustainable farming or in broader terms, sustainable agriculture is defined as utilising ecologically sound farming practices. It is further defined as farming ecologically by promoting methods and practices that are economically viable, environmentally sound and protect public health. This contributes to the growth of nutritious and healthy food as well as the protection of the farmer and workers from poisonous chemicals.
  • How long does it take to grow a mango tree?
Grown from seed or seedling they will take two to three years before producing fruit.
  • Why buy Papa Organics dried mango?
We have grown Kensington Pride and Kent mangoes on our own certified organic farm in Mareeba, Far North Queensland, Australia since 1992. We have chosen these two varieties for their superior taste and sweetness. The fruit is ripened, peeled, sliced and dried on the farm once a year, using the most technologically advanced equipment. Our mango is dried in various ways – strips, spears, cheeks, small pieces or a mixture of these. The quality, taste, texture and organic status is unmatched anywhere in the world. We produce the finest quality dried mango available worldwide.
  • What is the difference between Papa Organics dried mango and other dried mango?
Non-organic dried mango sells for around $85/kg for Australian mango and around $50/kg for imported mango from South East Asia and South America. Many Australian companies import this mango into the country and repack and rebrand it as Australian mango. They have a tiny label with the country of origin. This mango is of inferior quality and taste as the fruit has been sprayed with pesticides, fungicides and herbicides.
  • Why are there such big differences in price for dried mango?
There are various dried mango products sold into the market in both Australia and around the world. Around 50% are branded products and the other 50% are decanted and repacked products by individual stores from a bulk-buy wholesaler. Prices for dried mango vary considerably depending on the type of product being sold. Unfortunately, 90% of the market is made up of preserved dried mango, non-organic dried mango and organic dried mango from South East Asia of poor quality.
  • What is organic dried mango that is not from Australia?
Dried mango that is not marked as Australian grown is usually from South East Asia and South America. They do not have the stringent Australian standards. The organic dried mango grown and certified in Australia is renowned for being superior in quality and taste because of our high standards in the country.
  • What is preserved dried mango with sulphur dioxide?
This mango has been dried with a large moisture content in order to increase bulk, volume and weight and reduce the price of the product. It sells for around $50/kg retail in Australia. The mango can be both local and imported and is not as healthy as Australian certified organic dried mango.
  • What is preserved dried mango with added sugar?
This is the cheapest and nastiest dried mango (in terms of health) and is usually imported. It sells for around $20/$30/kg. It is very high in sugar and preservatives and if you have eaten good quality dried mango, you will observe that preserved dried mango does not taste like mango.
